Do Essential Oils Really Work?

body-unburdened-young-living-essential-oils-2As a certified hippie (Oh yes, I'm a proud card carrier), even I was a bit skeptical when my mom wanted to rub me down with oils for the nasty case of bronchitis that had come to knock me off of my feet.

I looked a bit like a pathetic mummy after she rubbed Young Living Thieves Oil (cut with a carrier oil) all over my chest and throat every hour upon the hour, then wrapping me up with a scorching hot towel.  Her diffuser poured billowing steam laced with something called Thieves and R.C. into my nostrils, and she kept coming by to reapply a few drops to the soles of my feet.  If I'd had enough energy to actually care, I would have protested.  But because I felt like a cat had crawled inside and scratched up my throat, I would have let her do just about anything if it brought some some relief.

You know how you just know your body?  The icky sick that I felt growing inside of my throat and lungs that day was the same sickness that I had felt many times before—and it had always resulted in a week in bed.  But the next morning the strangest thing happened—I woke up almost completely well.

And that's when this hippie became an oil believer.

I bought my Young Living Everyday Oils Essential Oil Collection, purchased the Gentle Babies book to teach me how to use them on my 2 year old son, Moses, and hoped that my surprise recovery hadn't been a fluke.

And then my son came home from Mother's Day Out with hand, foot, and mouth disease

I opened up my Gentle Babies book and followed the directions to a T…..alternating YL thieves, melrose, purification and lavender on the soles of his feet and up and down his spine (cut with a carrier oil on his spine!).  After putting him down for his nap, the bumps that had started to surface on his wrists, chest, and feet had all but disappeared in a matter of hours.  It was as if the oils had completely reversed what had already started to take place.  For the next 24 hours, I kept up my oil regiment every time I changed his diaper, and the horrible disease that usually causes agonizing sores never had a chance to cause him any pain.

I put Lavender oil on all of our cuts, scrapes, and mosquito bites—and the healing properties of lavender are unreal, taking the swelling out of bites and healing cuts, scrapes, and burns in record time.  One morning while getting ready before church, I reached down and picked up my hot flat iron—on the left hand fingertips where I needed to play guitar to lead worship.  I immediately doused them in lavender, and no lie—by the time I got to church an hour and a half later, I played guitar with no pain, wondering how in the world my skin hadn't bubbled into a blister.

3548I put a drop of YL Frankincense oil in with my moisturizer every night, and it's literally reversing the wrinkles on my forehead and around my eyes.  Young Living Frankincense (and ONLY Young Living frankincense) has been tested to help reverse the effects of certain types of cancer, and I've actually talked to one person who testified this to be true to help completely rid her of breast cancer.  I also have a member of my family that began using YL Frankincense oil on a cyst in her breast, and the cyst completely disappeared.

Peppermint oil on my forehead, temples, the back of my neck has taken care of horrible headaches, and DiGize oil rubbed on the stomach (cut with oil) topped with Peppermint oil (cut with oil) has wiped out horrible tummy bugs in our household on multiple occasions.

Any time my throat starts to feel scratchy, I throw a drop of Melrose oil in the back of my throat and swish it around, then begin applying Thieves and R. C. on my feet and chest (the chest, always cut with oil), and I can't begin to count how many times it's reversed my sickness.

I know someone extremely prone to bladder infections, and she rubs YL Lemon oil topically over her bladder and puts a drop of YL DiGize in her belly button, and the infections that have required antibiotics year after year have never come back.

There's a bit of debate about whether or not essential oils should be digested, but because I LOVE LOVE LOVE Young Living and trust the quality of the product, every day I put 4 drops of Lemon oil in a drink for a deep, fresh cleaning.  (I DO NOT recommend ingesting other types of essential oils—especially ones bought at a store!)  I learned this recipe from my mother-in-law who got it from the book Trim Healthy Mama, and I must say, it's become a daily routine in our family.  Moses always asks for his ‘Shine':

img_6052GOOD GIRL MOONSHINE

-Fill a quart sized glass jar with water and ice

-Add 2 TBS of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

-Add 1 tsp Ginger Powder

-1/2-1 Packet Stevia Powder

-4 Drops Young Living Lemon oil

( Remember, you should NEVER put Lemon oil in styrofoam or plastic to drink out of!)

Lemon Oil is fantastic for cleaning, and if I ever needed to quickly clean out one of my baby bottles or rinse of a pacifier, a drop of Lemon oil sanitizes like a champ.

A few drops of YL Valor oil before I get my chiropractic adjustment helps my body hold the adjustment longer, and YL Panaway is more like God's Natural Bengay—working out all sorts of soreness and tension in my shoulders and muscles.

YL Purification is fantastic for cuts and scrapes, coughs and bronchitis, and Gentle Babies is one of my favorite smells in the world.  I used to douse Moses in the stuff after his bath, with a few drops of Peace & Calming.  And after Luca died on March 5, I put Joy on my heart, and Stress Away on my wrists and temples every day.

After Luca died, my body went a bit crazy. I had this terrible rash show up on the bottoms of my feet the day we showed up in Hawaii right before I spoke at the Bloom Conference in June.  When I got back home and went to two doctors—a family practitioner and a dermatologist—they gave me steroid pills and steroid cream to curb the terrible itch and calm down the rash.  I was so desperate for relief, I took them, and THEN found out that the heavy metals in the steroids were messing with my ovulation—-and as you can imagine, this mama is ready to get pregnant.  (And let me say, I was about to speak 9 times at Bethel's Worship University, and I needed a quick fix to get back on my feet for the week!)  But for weeks after taking the steroids (which did help curb the rash and the sores, but not cure the root) I tasted a metal taste in my mouth, my period was erratic, and one month, it never even showed up.  Believe me, when your body isn't working in the woman department you feel cray-cray.  After calling a friend who does Raindrop Therapy Sessions with Young Living Essential Oils, I went over to her house, and she worked on me for almost 3 hours applying oils.

And the very next morning, I immediately woke up and started my period.  As I continue applying the mixture she gave me, the metal taste in my mouth completely went away.

thieves4As the weather begins to get cold, we diffuse Thieves in the house, and I make sure to apply a couple of drops to my son's feet every day, especially when heading to Mother's Day Out.  Whatever you step on shows up in your saliva within 60 seconds, making the feet one of the primary spots to apply the oils to positively affect the entire body.  Thieves is proven to kill 99.95% of bacteria, and the mixture got its name after grave robbers would cover themselves in the stuff while robbing bodies that had been killed by the Black Plague.  It's crazy—-but the stuff just works.  And I must say, my little oil kit (my favorite being Thieves) has saved us hundreds upon hundreds of dollars in medical bills and prescriptions over the last two years since I began using them.

Not only are the oils great for wellness, but they're incredible cleaning products.  My mother and I dilute Thieves oil in with distilled water and use it as our bathroom cleaning supply—and Young Living has an entire line of Thieves cleaning products.  Instead of our family standing on bleach and chemicals that go directly into our body from the soles of our feet, Thieves products will kill the bacteria, and help fight infections in our bodies at the same time!

I must say, I feel sometimes like when you say you're into essential oils and someone says they are too—but they use DoTerra—it's almost as if you've discovered that you're in opposite biker gangs.  I have a lot of friends who LOVE their DoTerra products, still don't know ANYTHING about the company (except that the owner used to work for Young Living and broke off to start DoTerra….and apparently there's a lawsuit), but I do know that all essential oils are not created equal–especially ones bought from the store.

Unfortunately, the FDA has zero regulation on the labeling for essential oils, so if you head to Whole Foods and purchase a lavender oil for $7.00—even if it says that it's all natural—there's no way that a real, authentic, plant-based essential oil of pure lavender can be sold for just $7.00.  Basically, you get what you pay for.  And unfortunately, because the FDA has no regulation on the labels, there are many essential oils that slap promises on their label that simply aren't true.  For an oil to be 100 percent purely plant-based, it cannot be constructed in a lab—it must be pressed from nature.  And a lot of ‘pure' essential oils at the store are actually synthetic oils, constructed by man in a lab—which is why they're cheaper and why they don't work like they're supposed to.  The reason that I love Young Living  is because I know that they press the plant less than any other high end oil company to extract the oil, so the product is richer, more concentrated, and extremely potent.

For a while, I had no idea what essential oils actually did in my body.  I just knew they kept working.  And then I was introduced to this horribly scientific video (but with brilliant content), about how plant based essential oils literally go into our bodies and ENGULF the toxins that are poising us from things like plastics, pesticides, and chemicals.  If you have time to watch the entire AIRASE ESSENTIAL OIL BASICS VIDEO, it's totally worth it—answering several questions:

1)  What are essential oils?

2)  Where do they come from?

3) What is the difference between a genuine and synthetic oil?

4) What creates disease in the body?

5)  How do essential oils heal the body?

Okay, this is getting long.  Do I believe essential oils work?  Abso-freaking-lutely.  And as a mother who fights to keep antibiotics out of my child unless absolutely necessary, I've found an answer that not only works, but makes perfect sense as a believer.  Of COURSE my good, amazing, wonderful Father would provide the solution for SO many of our diseases, hurts, pains, and aches within the plants and nature that He created—because that follows His nature to heal.  Am I grateful for modern medicine?  ABSOLUTELY.  But if I can avoid synthetic, lab-generated medicines, you better believe I'm going to go the natural route first.

All I can say is do your research, try a few oils, and make your own decision.  If they've worked for me, I promises—they'll work for you, too.  And before you know it, you'll be a card carrying hippie just like me.  (:

xx,

  1. Raven pretty much gets us through “sick season.” I can’t stand to hear the kids up all night coughing and since we found Raven I haven’t had to! I used valor during my home birth and I swear it helped me blow through transition. Thanks for sharing your testimonies! Keep up the great writing!

  2. Deep Relief is UH-MAZING!! For me, it’s a bazillion times better than Panaway and I love that it’s a roll-on so it’s already diluted with a carrier oil. 🙂 I still love Panaway, I’ve just gotten great results with Deep Relief. Another roll-on I swear by is Breathe Again. I started with YL oils in January so we were smack in the middle of winter and RC and Raven were both out of stock for a long time and Breathe Again saved us when my son (2-1/2) was sick. He had a horrible cough and I’d put it on his feet at bedtime and then put socks on and he slept wonderfully. 🙂 I love love love my oils!

  4. Christa, Thank you for sharing your love for Young Living Essential Oils! Our Father is amazing to have created all that we need to take care of our bodies! I started using YL essential oils 2 1/2 years ago after suffering through a miscarriage. My dear mother-in-love gave me lavender, peppermint, and frankincense during a physically and emotionally difficult time. Praise God, they actually worked! I am a stay at home homeschooling mommy and this summer I decided to spread the word about how YL essential oils has helped our family. If any of your readers are interested, curious, or skeptical, they can contact me at sjsims721@yahoo.com. I live in South Dakota, if that helps anyone! Thanks again!

If I calculate all the doctors visits we would have had over the last two years, along with the prescriptions we would be needed, I promise you—oils might be more money up front. But they’re WAY cheaper in the long run. (:

  5. Thank you so much for sharing Christa!

Are there any reps in the Los Angeles area? I am also wondering what oils would help with PMS and cavities. My 2 1/2 yr. old son has already had 2 oral surgeries. I need to do something for him. His bad teeth run in our family. =(

  6. Ebonee Marrow

    Hey Christa!
Literally I cannot thank you enough for sharing your experience with essential oils! I’ve shared this with my friends and they are SO excited to carry their newly found “hippie cards” lol
I’m having trouble signing up on the Young Living website though, and finding a rep in my area. anyway you can help ?

  7. Amanda Hothan Wiskow

I had a long convo yesterday with a coworker that uses YL oils and then read your blog today. Coincidence? 🙂 I’m in Abilene and would love to get more info on ordering some! Thanks!

I just saw this post, and am SO glad to see that you are spreading the word about EO’s and natural childbirth (in your recent post, which was awesome btw). I am doTERRA user, and just wanted to share with you that the lawsuits are settled. Here is a link to the statements released. I love my doTERRA, but I also support my YL friends and users too. I run a non-brand specific support group for families who use oils for autism and adhd-over 3000 of us. We don’t get stuck on brand, we focus on results, and I must say, no matter the brand, we are seeing awesome results. Anyways, here is a link to those press releases : http://www.healinginourhomes.com/2014/05/lawsuits-settled-doterra-and-young.html

Just a genuine question about the essential oils. How do you discern that this is from God and not new age as it is aromatherapy…very often things like this are rooted in eastern religions/beliefs..How do you know it’s okay to use these products?

    • Christa Black

Hey girl! Yes, there is a lot of eastern things that I stay away from because they’re attached to things that I don’t agree with, but this definitely isn’t one of them. Sometimes i feel like believers stay COMPLETELY way from certain things because they’re ‘new age’ or Eastern—-and we have to remember…Jesus was eastern! Essential oils are ALL OVER the Bible—and here’s a great book that I haven’t read (but my mother loves) called ‘Healing Oils of the Bible.’

      http://www.experience-essential-oils.com/healing-oils-of-the-bible.html

Aromatherapy isn’t evil—-it’s just been used in evil ways. But God created my nose, and the oils that I’m smelling, and I love that He’s created ways within nature to heal the bodies that He created!

      I hope that helps!

      • Tsjitske Dotinga-Tubbs

Hi Christa, yes that helps a lot. You are right, as a christian it is easier to just stay away completely and then to miss out. Thank you for reminding me that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free!

        • Tsjitske Dotinga-Tubbs

Hi Christa, I’ve read the book ‘Healing oils of the Bible’ by David Stewart. It’s interesting but very flawed and inaccurate. I’ve read it discernfully and have come to the conclusion that essential oils are not the oils used in the bible in the same way as used by new-agers (e.g Young living and DoTerra) and others. I think oils are used all over the bible but that doesn’t imply that we should be putting our faith in them. His book clearly is very anti-doctors and anti-medicine (he’s got some good reasons which I partly agree with which is why this book is so dangerous in it’s reasoning). Being a social scientist myself I know how to read and test things scientifically but the most concerning things were his lack of ascribing power to using the name of Jesus and playing down Jesus’ his miracles as ‘therapy’. He even says in the book that we should tend to the sick but shouldn’t expect to do miracles…(John 14:13 clearly says we shall do miracles and greater works (see also Mark 16:17). Stewarts’ play with Greek words look intelligent but if you take time to read this book carefully I find it deeply flawed in reasoning and the book shows a superficial reading and understanding of scripture (without Holy Spirit understanding, he does not refer to the Holy Spirit but to a vague mention of being ‘guided’, but by whom?). Not to say that I don’t think plants have healing attributes to them, I do think that is true and yes God created plants. But the way Stewart uses the bible and ‘God and Christ’ (his words) to rectify his new-age beliefs (reflexology, aromatherapy, rain drop therapy, electro-magnetic field radiants, vitalism…being guided/channelled..etc) is very misleading and deceitful. I am going to continue to study this topic more as I am interested in the use of plants in the bible, however I don’t think this book should be recommended to christians as a christian/biblical book as it is not a christian book but a new-age book.

LOVE your article! (Witty, inspiring, & informative!) I am a Young Living enthusiast in Gilbert, AZ! I have read so many amazing testimonials like this – and we have had amazing results as well! We started with Thieves – I call it a “gateway” oil 😉 – and it has quickly relieved everything from a cold to a headache to influenza & strep!! When my son got influenza last year, the dr. prescribed Tamiflu ($100 & what’s IN that?). We applied Thieves instead he was feeling better the next day! We also spent over $3000 on ER visits due to asthma attacks in the two winters before I got Thieves – so it is a bargain to us!! Last summer my daughter – a competitive pianist & violinist – broke her elbow. The doctor told us to expect a minimum three month recovery. I started applying Valor, Panaway, & Peppermint to her arm several times a day starting the day the cast came off. She was playing 4 hours a day – pain free – in ONE week! My husband has had chronic insomnia for 10+ years – no more thanks to Peace & Calming in the diffuser. 🙂 My teen son uses lavender, lemon, & peppermint for his allergies & is completely off Zyrtec & sniff free! And my ore-menopausal symptoms that have affected my life for the last year? Gone! I’m with you! I can’t help but share about this gift from God that has blessed my family and so affected our health! I love to share what I’ve learned! I have lots of info I can pass along to others interested! Just email me at day2dayoilskm@gmail.com – I’d love to help anyone interested in learning more! :). Blessings!

    • Hello I am interested in receiving info on these particular oils!!! I am new to this arena as well as very interested!!!
Thanks so much for your time, energy, efforts and KNOWLEDGE!!! Take much care Pam

    • Christa Black

Hey Addy! Unfortunately, rashes are usually an inside-job—and what’s going on with our skin usually shows what’s going on in our digestive system. I put lavender and frankincense on my psoriasis patch (or whatever it was!) and it went away when I put those on PLUS changed my diet and started replenishing my gut flora with probiotics. I’ll try to write a blog on what I did!

  12. I will be trying some oils for Kidney disease. I’m both nervous, yet excited at the same time, as many have testimonies of remarked improvement since taking these oils. God created this earth and everything in it, and well, I am willing to try these “natural” things to see if they help!!!

  13. heather

Hi Christa, I am a 2 time survivor of uterine cancer. Have you heard of oils helping with my type of cancer. I do not want to be a 3x survivor, I am just regrowing my hair from the last round. Also what type of oil helps with hot flashes? Thank you

  14. Sarabeth Parido

Oh Christa… God just continues to use you in my life (you don’t know it, but we’re best friends and I talk about you on a first name basis around here). I recently joined WorshipU and you have ministered to me so much… God has asked me to step out and lead with guitar (instead of just vocally) and my fingers are shredded as I’m a rookie and my calluses aren’t where they need to be. I came in after rehearsing “The King Is Here” and thought, I’ll google essential oils for guitar playing, hoping to find something to sooth these fingertips… and you came up… I said “no way.”… thank you for continuing to minister to me… now even leading me to grab my lavender oil and head back to the frets again.

  15. Ashley Wilson

Christa, what oils did she use on you that helped you to start your period? I am having a hard time getting pregnant because of irregular periods. I would love to know what you used!:) I’m desperate:/

  16. I never comment on threads but in this case I had to. I’m an -everything
natural- enthusiast and work since years with essential oils. I also
came to aromatherapy through YL and I still love and buy their products.
But there are also other very good eo products out there who use
reliable and proper extraction methods so please do not state the above:
Young living AND ONLY Young living frankincense work, cause it’s simply
not true and you are sounding like a sales rep above else. Please do
your studies and inform yourself on the plant properties and the way of
extraction before you make claims that this beautiful resin (which has
indeed powerful healing powers and is used for these since centuries)
only activates for a YL label.
